The Brand Story of Tempur Mattress
The Tempur mattress story originates in the 1960s with NASA. Scientists developed a unique viscoelastic foam to cushion astronauts against intense G-forces during space travel. This groundbreaking material, designed to absorb pressure and evenly distribute weight, was later released for public use in the 1980s.
Two Swedish entrepreneurs, through a Danish company, spent nearly a decade perfecting this NASA-developed foam for sleep. In 1991, they successfully introduced the world's first TEMPUR® mattress and pillow. Its innovative, pressure-relieving qualities quickly found success, initially in healthcare, before transforming the consumer sleep market.
The brand expanded globally, founding Tempur-Pedic Inc. in North America in 1992. Tempur became synonymous with memory foam innovation, eventually merging with Sealy to form Tempur Sealy International in 2012. Today, Tempur remains a leader in sleep technology, directly tracing its heritage to the original space-age invention, bringing unparalleled comfort and support to bedrooms worldwide.
